My style of painting is generally referred to as direct painting. I paint what I see in a representational manner. Sometimes the subject of the painting is a well thought out composition and design of a particular idea however when painting on location and especially with watercolors, my paintings will take on a more spontaneous feel primarily because of the nature of plein air painting where time is of the essence. Painting in the studio offers the luxury of time and a controlled environment. Each has it's advantages and detriments.
I often envision a painting as either a watercolor or an oil. Each medium has it's own unique attributes which I can employ to create the effect I am looking for. On occasion I will do the same idea in first one medium and then do it again in the other to see which is appropriate. They always turn out different however, which is as it should be.
